Here’s what Wendy sent to us: The stories in The Good Life Lab begin at 80 Acres and Black Rock City. The discovery of a real gift economy is the impetus that sets in motion the adventures that follow. This book covers a range of burning lifestyle skills like making your own fuel, building structures out of waste material, a trampoline that shoots fire balls, remodeling shipping containers, living off grid, recovering dead batteries and hacking appliances. The Good Life Lab also features a Black Rock Arts funded project that I created in New York City in 2004 called Swap-O-Rama-Rama. It is a textile-repurposing event that won a grant for taking Playa ethics to real world default communities.
My main aim with this work is to distinguish the default world from the one that is being built by creative folks all over the world, by Burners and people who understand that when the whole world is for sale the maker of things is the revolutionary of the age. The book is also an artwork with a community of illustrators who designed spreads for it, and contributions by many foreword writers including Doug Rushkoff (author of Life Inc. and Present Shock), The Reverend Billy Talen of the Church of Stop Shopping, Fermentation fetishist Sandor Ellix Katz and others.
Here are the details of my Seattle stops. I’d LOVE to meet local Burners! : )
