I have long wanted to attempt this technique found in the world of altered books – creating a new story or a poem extracted from existing text by highlighting or obscuring words. In 1966, artist Tom Phillips created ‘A Humument’, 367 pages of altered text – each one a individual piece of art – telling a completely new story. The original text was an obscure Victorian book called “A Human Document” first published in 1892 and purchased by Smith for three pence. Since then its had four revisions and is considered a ‘seminal classic of post modern art.” I’ve included a handful of pages after the jump.
You can see more of “A Humument”, including images of the original page and intermediary steps, HERE.
