I was introduced to the work of artist James Jean through his cover work on the comic book series Fables by Bill Willingham. His work in the comic book industry itself has garnered him acclaim and awards – ‘seven Eisner awards, three consecutive Harvey awards, two gold medals and a silver from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, and a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators of New York.’ Aside from comics, he’s also done work for The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Playboy and other publications as well as working with fashion designers Prada and Phillip Lim. In short, he gets around. And little wonder. His work is beautiful, elegant and sometimes haunting. There are scads of those comic covers I want to frame and hang in my house.
