Pin Me Up: Handiedan

handiedan_amo_no3

Today we bring you the work of Dutch artist, Handiedan.  By combining traditional cutting techniques and computer generated effects, Handiedan creates dimensional collages of pin-up beauties layered on top of Victorian flavored backgrounds. Using currency, playing cards, sheet music and other ephemera, each collage is cheeky and rich in detail. (see up-close image below).

Handiedan will have a solo show at Rog La Rue in September 2014.  See more of her work now after the jump.

Dreaming in Portland: Jennifer Parks

jparks7

The works of Portland, OR illustrator and Jennifer Parks are beautifully rendered with great line work and an attention to detail. But just because they are are gorgeous doesn’t mean they aren’t a little unsettling at times. Parks says of her work –

“I love nature, art, and all things magical. I’m inspired by childhood memories, dreams, nightmares, and the beauty and mystery of life, death, and the ever expanding cosmos.”

Jennifer is also the co-owner of the Pony Club Gallery.

Art of the Quote: Zen Pencils

evilquoteSeveral weeks back a lovely cartoon inspired by Bill Waterson’s ‘Calvin and Hobbes’ was making the rounds on the interwebs. I recently discovered that it was from  a website called Zen Pencils: Cartoon Quotes from Inspirational People.

Launched in early 2012, it is the brainchild of Australian cartoonist and graphic designer Gavin Aung Than and it’s inception is a story old as time. Says Than,

“I was working in the boring corporate graphic design industry for 8 years before finally quitting at the end of 2011 to pursue my passion for illustration and cartooning. At my old job, when my boss wasn’t looking, I would waste time reading Wikipedia pages, mainly biographies about people whose lives where a lot more interesting than mine. Their stories and quotes eventually inspired me to leave my job to focus on what I really wanted to do. The idea of taking these inspiring quotes, combining them with my love of drawing and sharing them with others led to the creation of Zen Pencils.”

Because of its size, I’ve placed one of Than’s cartoons – a loving interpretation of a quote from the late, great film critic Roger Ebert – below the jump.

Portrait of a young man as a kinetic artist: Reuben Margolin

yellowSpiral_2

In this Pop! Tech video, artist Reuben Margolin takes us through both his creative history and the evolution of his kinetic sculptures. I’m always fascinated with the creative journey – whether it’s actors or artists – and what they reveal about inner lives and inspirations. I really think you will enjoy this particular journey – it strikes me as especially burner-esque.  And  you may have already encountered some of his work on The Playa.

If you like kinetic sculpture, you may also like this post.

I Want To Go To There: Gibbs Farm

orr_electrum

Eric Orr “Electrum”

Earlier this year we featured Anish Kapoor’s Dismemberment here on Saucey Dogs. At that time I learned about Gibbs Farm where it resides. Located in North Auckland, New Zealand on the edge of Kaipara Harbour (the largest harbour in the Southern Hemisphere), Gibbs Farm is a private sculpture collection owned by Alan Gibbs. In the 20+ years he’s owned the Farm, Gibbs has commissioned large scale and site specific sculptural pieces including the worlds largest tesla coil (pictured above).

Today, Gibbs Farm is the home of 25 works of art. Today we feature seven of them.

Tree House: London Fieldworks

city1

“Spontaneous City in the Tree of Heaven” is an installation piece by the art/architecture firm London Fieldworks. Located in two separate sites in London (one in the east, the other on the west side), each sculptural piece consists of multiple ‘bespoke’ birdhouses that reflect the neighborhood architecture.  I don’t know. I just like things in trees. It’s cool.

Our 200th Post! You know you want it…

Would you believe this is Saucey Dog’s 200 post? Not since our 100th post have we been this excited! To celebrate I bring you a NQSFQ (Not quite safe for work) video from this summer. What happens when some of Seattle’s burlesque performers* re-make one of the summers biggest hits? A less rapey good time. Everybody get up!

*Couldn’t find a website for the lovely Dalisha Phillips. Sorry 🙁

Not a Rorschach: Alberto Sevesos

sevesos3

Italian photographer and graphic designer Alberto Sevesos created his series ‘a Due Colori’ using just three tools: water, two drops of ink and a high-speed camera. As the ink drops, it seems to unfold as if it were particularly silky scarf – belying it’s actual liquid nature. If you think these are cool, check out another of his series using metallic ink.

Art of the Tale: Serena Malyon

malyonpolar

I’ve been reading a lot of ‘re-told’ fairy tales lately so it wasn’t a complete surprise when I found myself drawn to the work of Canadian illustrator Serena Malyon. Using watercolor, colored pencil, and ink – as well as digital manipulation – Malyon creates charming paintings that evokes the wonder-full.

See more of her work after the jump.
